Combur 9 urine test strips – 50 strips

Combur 9 urine test strips are designed for quick and easy urine testing. A single test strip measures nine different parameters:

1. Protein

2. Glucose

3. Ketones

4. Nitrite

5. Leukocytes

6. pH

7. Blood

8. Bilirubin

9. Urobilinogen

Leukocytes are white blood cells. These cells are part of the immune system. The presence of leukocytes in urine may indicate inflammation or an infection of, for example, the bladder or urinary tract. However, the leukocyte test pad is not always reliable in animals.

The strips can be used to test urine from humans and various mammals, including dogs, cats, horses, rabbits and rodents. The result can be read within 1 to 2 minutes by comparing the colours on the test strip with the colour chart on the packaging.

Collecting and storing urine

Preferably collect the urine in a clean, dry container. You can also collect the urine from a clean, dry and non-absorbent surface.

Make sure that no traces of cleaning products, faeces, cat litter, soil or other dirt enter the urine. These may affect the test result.

Use fresh urine whenever possible and perform the test as soon as possible. The urine must not be more than two hours old when tested. Are you unable to perform the test immediately? Temporarily store the urine in a sealed container in the refrigerator. Allow the sample to return to room temperature before testing and mix it gently.

Please note:

Combur 9 was originally developed for human urine. In animals, normal values and the reliability of the individual test pads may vary between species.

An abnormal result does not always mean that the animal is ill. Conversely, a normal result does not completely rule out a medical condition. Contact a veterinarian if the animal has symptoms, if you are unsure about the result or if the test produces an abnormal result.

Use in dogs

In dogs, the glucose, ketone, protein, pH, blood and bilirubin values may provide useful information. However, the result of a urine test strip is not a definitive diagnosis.

The leukocyte and nitrite values are not reliable enough in dogs to diagnose or rule out cystitis. The leukocyte test pad may indicate that no white blood cells are present when they are actually present in the urine. A negative result therefore does not always mean that nothing is wrong.

A small amount of bilirubin may sometimes be normal in dogs. This is particularly seen in male dogs with highly concentrated urine. The urobilinogen value usually provides little useful information in dogs.

Use in cats

In cats, the glucose, ketone, protein, pH and blood values may provide useful information. A test strip alone cannot provide a definitive diagnosis in cats either.

The leukocyte test pad is not reliable in cats. The strip may indicate that white blood cells are present in the urine when they are not actually present. A positive result therefore does not automatically mean that the cat has cystitis or a urinary tract infection.

The nitrite value is also not reliable enough in cats to diagnose or rule out a urinary tract infection. Further testing by a veterinarian is required, such as a microscopic examination of the urine or a urine culture.

Bilirubin should not normally be present in cat urine. A positive result should therefore be assessed by a veterinarian. The urobilinogen value usually provides little useful information in cats.
