What is special about Manuka honey?

Manuka honey comes from the flowers of the Manuka bush, which grows only in New Zealand. It is a special type of honey because of its unique composition and medicinal properties.

Manuka honey contains a natural enzyme called glucose oxidase, which converts glucose into hydrogen peroxide. This enzyme, combined with the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of the honey, makes it very effective in treating wounds.

Manuka honey also has a high content of methylglyoxal (MGO), an antibacterial agent that inhibits the growth of bacteria in the wound. The MGO content is often used to assess the quality of Manuka honey and is expressed in MGO+/kg. The higher the MGO content, the stronger the antibacterial activity of the honey.

Activon Manuka honey gel contains 100% medicinal Manuka honey with no additives. The honey has been filtered and sterilised, making it suitable for use in wounds. Manuka honey's unique composition and high antibacterial activity make it an excellent choice for treating various wounds, including infected wounds and burns.

In addition, Manuka honey also has an osmotic effect, meaning it draws moisture from the surrounding tissue into the wound. This helps remove necrotic tissue and batter and creates a moist wound environment, which is essential for proper wound healing.

In short, Manuka honey is a highly effective and natural remedy for treating wounds. Its unique composition and medicinal properties make it a popular choice for both humans and animals.

Composition Activon Manuka Honey wound gel

100% medicinal Manuka Honey without additives.

Use

Remove cap, apply liberally to the wound bed with a minimum depth of 5mm and cover with a secondary dressing.  After opening, use within four days.
For wounds with high levels of wound fluid, a super absorbent dressing can be used to manage the wound fluid.

Animals may lick the honey, which is usually not a problem. You may cover the wound with Petflex elastic bandage after smearing the honey on the wound.

Storage

Keep closed at room temperature, out of reach of children. Due to the properties of honey, it may solidify when cold and become more liquid when warm. If the product has hardened, warm the tube in your hands or pocket just before use. If the honey gel is too runny, place it in the fridge for a few minutes.

Indications

As honey is a natural product, residual honey will have no adverse effect.
Activon Honey Gel can be applied to any wound but is especially suitable for:

  • Ulcers
  • surgical wounds
  • burns
  • infected wounds
  • cavities and sinuses.

Contra-indications

Although honey is not absorbed into the bloodstream through the wound, we recommend monitoring glucose levels in diabetic patients. Do not use if the patient is allergic to bee venom. Some discomfort may occur when applying the honey. This depends on the sensitivity of the wound and can be remedied with the appropriate level of analgesia. The initial discomfort generally goes away on its own. If discomfort persists, the application of honey should be discontinued and the wound subsequently flushed with saline.
